Governor Newsom and Family are My Townmates in Fair Oaks, California

It was only last week that I learned that Governor Gauvin Newsom and family
are my town mates here in Fair Oaks, California.  They have moved to their new residence since last year, but I just learned of it last week. Their residence is only about 2.5 miles from our residence. Unlike former Governor Arnold S., I have never met Governor Newsom in person, but I admired him very much. The governor is currently Ditas ( my youngest daughter) Big Boss.

Last week, I saw in the TV news, small crowds of protestors were picketing in the gate of the mansion. I got curious so I did some internet search and here's what I learned.

The house was purchased in 2019 by a company registered to Newsom's cousin, Jeremy Scherer, co-president of PlumpJack, a hospitality company founded by Newsom. The cost was 3.7 million and according to Zillow.com, it is the most expensive house in Fair Oaks.  Controversy about the purchase is also on the news.

The 12,000 square-foot home is "more kid-friendly" for the four Newsom children, all under 10, said Newsom spokesman Nathan Click. The family plans to move, along with their two dogs and rabbit, once their new house is renovated in a few months. It has 6 bedrooms and 10 bathrooms in eight acres of manicured landscaping over looking the Sacramento Bluff and Bar.

A Realtor's invitation described the Fair Oaks property as a "sophisticated Santa Barbara Montecito-styled home within over eight acres of park-like setting" including a wine cellar, pool, guest house and tennis court.

However,  the Official Residence of the Governor of California is located in Mid-Town Sacramento.

The Historic Governor's Mansion of California, is the official residence of the Governor of California. It is located at 1526 H Street in Sacramento. The mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The mansion was home to thirteen governors and their families, from George Pardee in 1903 to Ronald Reagan for four months in 1967. After nearly fifty years as a public museum, the mansion resumed its role as an official residence in 2015, when then-Governor Jerry Brown moved into the property with his wife.

The thirty-room, three story Second Empire-Italianate Victorian mansion was built in 1877 for local hardware merchant Albert Gallatin, who sold it to businessman Joseph Steffens, the father of journalist Lincoln Steffens, in 1887. The State of California purchased the house in 1903 to serve as the governor's mansion. Many furnishings remain from former governors, including Pardee's 1902 Steinway piano, velvet chairs and sofas belonging to Governor Hiram Johnson, and Persian rugs bought by the wife of Earl Warren. The structure has been renovated a number of times over the years. In 1967 after the Reagans moved out, the mansion was turned into a museum and opened to the public. The third floor of the mansion has been closed to the public since the 1990s.
