Is Display of Public Affection (DPA) Good or Bad?

Just recently, I have observed that a male senior citizen visitor here at THD has displayed an example of PDA. On my way to Newton's the other day, I saw this gentleman,  putting his arm on another lady senior waist/back while they were on their way to lunch. I saw the same gentleman visitor at the Luau the other day mildly stroking/touching with affection the back of the senior Lady. I felt this is an example of a minor display of public affection. Is this Good or Bad?

I am afraid this couple may be a victim of gossips if they continue this behaviour in public specially here at THD. This incident inspired me to do a little reading on PDA. Here's what I learned.

A public display of affection (PDA) is any act of intimacy between a couple that is in view of others. Hugging, kissing, or holding your partner’s hand in public are some examples of PDA. Sharing a private intimate moment in a public forum such as social media can also be a form of PDA.

PDA can be a controversial subject. While some people support it and think it’s romantic, others disapprove of it and find it inappropriate and unnecessary.

In the article below💚, the authors discuss the benefits and negative effects of PDA on relationships, misconceptions and cultural boundaries around PDA, as well as the psychology of couples who show PDA. The authors also asked a psychologist who specializes in relationships for some tips on how to talk to your partner about PDA. In the examples below I was surprise that complimenting others, maybe an example of PDA.

There are a few potential reasons why some couples may engage in frequent public displays of affection:

  1. Expressing strong feelings: For some couples, frequently showing physical affection in public is a way to express the depth of their emotional connection and feelings for one another. This can stem from a desire to share their love openly.
  2. Seeking attention or validation: In some cases, public displays of affection may be a way for couples to seek attention, validation, or approval from others. This could arise from insecurities or a need for external validation of their relationship.
  3. Impulsiveness or lack of self-control: Certain couples may simply have difficulty regulating their physical intimacy and feel compelled to express it publicly, even if it makes onlookers uncomfortable.
  4. Establishing relationship status: Overt public affection can be a way for couples, especially younger ones, to signal the status of their relationship to peers and the outside world.
  5. Cultural norms: The prevalence and acceptability of public displays of affection can vary considerably across different cultures and social contexts. What seems excessive in one setting may be seen as normal in another.

Ultimately, the motivations behind constant public displays of affection are complex and can differ from couple to couple. While it may stem from sincere feelings, it can also indicate underlying issues like insecurity or a lack of discretion.

Examples of PDA

These are some examples of PDA:

  • Holding hands with your partner
  • Kissing their lips, cheek, forehead, neck, or hand
  • Hugging, holding, or cuddling them
  • Touching or stroking them
  • Playing with their fingers or hair
  • Massaging their shoulders, back, hands, or feet
  • Putting your arms around their waist or shoulder
  • Feeding them a bite of food
  • Holding them close while dancing
  • Sitting on their lap
  • Whispering in their ear
  • Gazing into their eyes
  • Winking at them
  • Blowing them a kiss
  • Telling them you love them
  • Complimenting them

Do You Want to meet Your Doppelgänger? Newton's Noise Level Update

Former President Barack Obama and his Doppelganger -Ilham Anaz from Java-Photo Credit; The Guardian.com

When I was in Graduate school at the University of Illinois (1960-1964-photo below) in Chicago, one of my classmates informed me that he has a friend in Hawaii who looked exactly like me.

I was humored and forgot about it, until I read the following article published by CNN as follows:

You have a doppelganger and probably share DNA with them, new study suggests

A doppelganger is a mysterious, exact double of a living person. It's a German word that literally translates to "double walker" or "double goer". A doppelganger isn't someone who just resembles you, but is an exact double, right down to the way you walk, act, talk, and dress. Your doppelganger may or not be related to you.

According to the website at the bottom of this page, all of us have a double who looks exactly like us and are not related but may share some common DNA.

https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/doppelgangers-dont-just-look-alike-they-also-share-dna-180980635/

With the advent of social media, there have been several reported cases of people finding their "twin stranger" online, a modern term for a doppelgänger. There are several websites where users can upload a photo of themselves and facial recognition software attempts to match them with another user of like appearance. Some of these sites report that they have found numerous living doppelgängers

Would you be interested in meeting your doppelganger? I am if someone helps me with the facial recognition software mentioned in the article above and apps below.

Meanwhile, I was able to talk again to Rachel Ryan(THD CFO) the other day, regarding the noise level at Newton's. I told her there was a suggestion to perhaps carpet the floors and installed Draperies in the windows to reduce the noise level during dinner meal times when the restaurant is full. Ms Ryan said she will look into it. Again this is benefits versus expense issue which may be not attainable, But I will keep my fingers crossed. Meantime, if you want to avoid the noise inside Newton's at dinner come early at 4:30PM or later at 6:10PM (or occupy early (4:45PM) the tables outdoors during good weather. Several Residents order their Food and partake it in their apartments to avoid the noise most of the time. For Details visit:

Health Benefits of Jogging- Covid Warning/Power Outage

The last couple of days, incidence of Covid Cases here at THD appears to be in the increase. I heard about 4 residents have Covid in the Heritage Building. Thus the following reminder from THD Management (see brochure below).  Yesterday, I also heard  that there was a 2-hour Power Outage In the Heritage Tower which also affected the Food Preparation at Newton's. Lucky for me, The Fairmont and Liberty Buildings were not affected. This incident is loud signal to THD Management to provide Emergency Generators in all the Buildings in case of Power Outage- even if it only covers the Kitchen.  Front Desk and Elevators. I heard a couple of residents were trapped in the Elevator of the Heritage Tower. If that was me I would have a Panic Attack since I am claustrophobic. I pray I will never be trapped in the Elevator Here at THD.

Meanwhile, In my previous posting I discussed the health benefits of walking. Today's post is the health benefits of running and jogging. Here at THD's, I only know of one Resident who is addicted to Running.

Regular running or jogging offers many health benefits. Running can:

  • help to build strong bones, as it is a weight bearing exercise
  • strengthen muscles
  • improve cardiovascular fitness
  • burn plenty of kilojoules
  • help maintain a healthy weight.

An inactive lifestyle is associated with higher mortality, coronary artery disease, hypertension and stroke. It is also a primary cause of most chronic diseases, as the body rapidly adapts to insufficient physical activity which results in substantially reduced quality of life.

Regular physical activity such as running can significantly improve mental health, self-confidence, healthy ageing, and quality of life.

  • Running versus jogging

The difference between running and jogging is intensity. Running is faster, uses more kilojoules and demands more effort from the heart, lungs and muscles than jogging. Running requires a higher level of overall fitness than jogging.

Both running and jogging are forms of aerobic exercise. Aerobic means 'with oxygen' – the term 'aerobic exercise' means any physical activity that produces energy by combining oxygen with blood glucose or body fat.

Goal setting for running and jogging

Think about what you want to achieve from running or jogging. Issues to consider may include:

    • Getting fit – if you're a beginner, you should start with brisk walking, progress to jogging and work up to running. This should take a few months.
    • General fitness – mix your running with other forms of exercise (such as swimming or team sports) to maximise your overall fitness.
    • Weight loss – adjust your diet to include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetableslean meatswholegrain cereals and low-fat dairy products. Cut back on dietary fats, takeaway foods, soft drinks and sugar.
    • Companionship – you could run with a friend or join a local running club.
    • Competition – running clubs may offer competitive events. Most clubs have sessions designed for beginners through to advanced runners. You can pit your running skills against others in fun runs or marathons. Many community-based running events cater for people of all ages and abilities. Join a local orienteering club to combine running with the challenge of navigating through various environments.

Heritage Homes of Boac, Marinduque, Philippines

Today's Blog is about, Boac, Marinduque, Philippines- Location of our former Retirement Home. Boac is where Macrine(RIP)💚 grow up and where we built a beach House💜after my retirement from FDA. Boac is also famous for its Heritage homes.
The Ancestral Home of Macrine (RIP) Parents ( The Nieva-Jambalos Clan)

Marinduque, the island province just south of the Luzon mainland, is best known for its lively Lenten events and traditions like the Moriones, where townsfolk dress up as masked Roman centurions. It is also regarded as the butterfly capital of the country. It’s a favorite Holy Week destination in the Philippines of hundreds of Filipinos and Tourist all over the world.

This was originally the TEOFILO N. ROQUE ANCESTRAL HOUSE- home of the hero of " Battle of Paye" Balimbing, Boac, Marinduque.  It was later sold to the 1st wife of Juan Nieva ( mother of Elena Decena) and Bernardo C. Jambalos.  Later the heritage house was inherited by the Jambalos Siblings. It is located at the corner of Nepomuceno and Deogracias Sts., San Miguel ,Boac, Marinduque just across the Boac Hotel. This house is currently owned by Siony Jambalos ( Macrine's Sister-in-law) and her children.

There are a handful of heritage sites you can see around town, which is compact enough to be explored on foot. Several bahay na bato, the two-storey townhomes of the middle and upper class during colonial times, can be found in the town center. They’re especially photogenic in the early morning before 9am, when establishments haven’t opened, and parked vehicles do not clog the narrow streets.
Immaculate Conception Cathedral was built like a fortress to protect the townsfolk during Moro raids.

BOAC CATHEDRAL

One can start their heritage walk at the Boac Cathedral, formally the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, the most imposing heritage structure sitting on a hill overlooking the town and Boac River. Built in 1792, the cathedral compound is surrounded by defensive stone walls, as the structure also served as refuge when the town was attacked by Moro raiders from Mindanao.

Oral tradition has it that during one of these invasions the Virgin Mary suddenly appeared with outstretched hands and drove away the intruders. The miraculous event led to the devotion to the Virgin Mary as Mahal na Birhen ng Biglang Awa (Our Lady of Prompt Succor), whose venerated image is housed in a separate contemporary shrine next to the cathedral.

The 700-year-old Marinduque Celadon Jar was declared a National Cultural Treasure in 2010.
Traditional Moryonan costumes decorated with shells.

WELL-PRESERVED INTERIOR OF CASA DE DON EMILIO RESTAURANT.

Note the wraparound media aguas (window canopies) of Boac’s old homes like the Navarro Heritage House.

ANCESTRAL HOUSES

Numerous ancestral houses still stand across the town center of Boac. In 1912, a great fire gutted several homes in poblacion, so most of the old houses we see today were built after that tragic event. More than a century later, history repeated itself when eight heritage houses were completely destroyed by fire in 2018, including Maharlikang Tahanan ni Kapitan Piroco (Don Piroco Mansion), the historic residence where MarinduqueĂąos requested that their island become a separate province from Tayabas (now Quezon Province).

A standout feature of Boac’s old houses are the wraparound media aguasor window canopies, supported by long wooden braces, which reminded me of the wooden sticks used to prop up windows of the bahay kubo, the vernacular stilt house from which bahay na bato evolved from. Nearly all of the heritage houses in town remain as private residences, so tourists can usually only admire them from the outside.

From Metro Manila, take a bus to Dalahican Port in Lucena City, where Starhorse Shipping Lines and Montenegro Shipping Lines runs frequent ro-ro ferries to Balanacan Port on Marinduque island. Travel time takes around three hours. From Balanacan Port, public jeepneys await to take travelers to Boac town, 15 km away.
